THQ Part 4: Deadly Creatures

Deadly Creatures by Rainbow Studios looks to be one of the more interesting Wii titles to date. I am not Wii bashing, as fun and clever as a Wii maybe, most of their games feel a bit on the light side of things. If you are looking for something unique to the video game genre, Deadly Creatures will deliver this autumn.

Deadly Creatures looks promising however the trailer gives this game no justice as compared to the game play. The story is "told" from the perspective of either a tarantula or a scorpion. Kind of like the Mister Mosquito game for PS2 but with out that Katamari level of cuteness.

Rainbow Studios takes what they know, which is an arid climate, and puts it into their games. Desert life will be represented in a much more realistic manner rather than a cartoony way. The main characters do not talk, because insects don't speak. The story is told from a variety of vantage points that the player will be able to see. A fly on the wall if you will. Humans in cut scenes and in the background will be discussing the main plot points of the story. I am looking forward most to this title.

THQ part 3: Baja

I don't really care one way or the other about driving games. I loved the Burnout series until, in my opinion ruined it when, they took what was a simple concept and tried to turn it into something it was never meant to be. The key words were simple concept, something that game developers seemed to have forgotten to do since we have added added a few extra buttons on to our controllers. Baja from THQ takes us back to a simpler time. This game looks pretty impressive, and the game play is tight and fun. It takes place in what is to be the Baja area of Mexico and California. It is a racing game; the more you win, the more you race, the more you race and win the better your car can get. This is nothing new to the genre. This is also right about the part where I loose interest, I really don't care about what kind of tires I can get on my video game car, or how the front hood scoop added to my drag coefficient. I like the fast car or the strong car, and sometimes something in between.

Call me crazy but I don't like hitting things in driving game, I like jumping and flying through the air. The game is being made by Rainbow Studios who are out of Phoenix and they must know what is like to have some wide open spaces. For a guy that is generally not into racing games as a whole this might fill the void that Burnout Paradise has yet to fill.

All of that aside, this game might have the coolest multilayer feature ever. According to the THQ representative you will be able to play a 4 hour 1000 mile Baja race. I think it is pretty cool that they want to make a race that long and since it is over a off road/on road terrain it could make for a fun experience. There will also be an option to have the game run by itself for a period of time with out you drivng, so if you have to go to the bathroom, or make a sandwich, or get a soda, you can, without having to pause the game, and loose you track positioning.

THQ Part 2: Destroy All Humans! :Path Of The Furon

In a world of next-gen greens and browns....

Destroy All Humans!:Path Of The Furon, is a fun sandbox game where you play an alien that has been living on Earth for the past 20 years harvesting mankind. Destroy All Humans! first came out on last generations consoles and was fun, a little repetitive, but fun. The jokes were funny, but a little repetitive, the game play was solid, but a little repetitive, the boards were clever but when you got right down to it, a little repetitive. Now THQ is delivering Destroy All Humans to this generation of consoles, hopefully it will be slightly less repetitive.

But what is a sequel with out a bit of repetition? Highlander 2 is the answer, and that movie sucked. Every sequel needs a bit of throwback. The hard pill for me that i have to continuously swallow with the Destroy All Humans series is that they always want to have it take place in the past the 50's, the 60's, and now the 70's. The main character name is Crypto and he talks like Jack Nicholson, and the guy from Invader Zim plays the alien high command. To be honest there is something that has always rubbed me the wrong way about that.

In all fairness the game play that was showed to us by THQ was impressive. The level design is more detailed, your line of sight is further, and your game play as Crypto seemed to have a more more destructive feel. There is new weapons for the space craft game play including ship to ship combat. I might not put this at the top of my list, but if you have never played a Destroy All Humans game before this is to be the highlight of the series.
